THE HIDDEN RISKS OF SITTING.

You are probably sitting now to read this blog & sitting for a shorter period of time is not that harmful. But nowadays our lifestyle has switched to being sedentary.

Sitting makes us feel good and at ease. You might be feeling sitting is good for your body to relax, right?

But actually our bodies are meant to be moving. Inside us are over 360 joints & about 700 skeletal muscles that enable easy fluid motion. This shows that are bodies are not built for sedentary existence.

Our blood depends on us moving around to be able to circulate properly. Also our nerve cells benefit from movement & our skin is elastic, meaning it moulds to our motion.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU SIT FOR LONG?

1.     A common way of sitting is with a curved back and slumped shoulders, a position that puts uneven pressure on your spine.

2.     Overtime this causes wear and tear in spinal disc leading to lower back issues.

3.     This hunched shape shrinks your chest cavity, meaning your lungs have less space to expand into when you breath.

4.     That’s a problem, because it temporarily limits the amount of oxygen that fills your lungs and filters into your blood.

5.     The act of sitting for prolonged periods leads to compression and stiffness in the muscles. Thus causing tightness in the lower back and hamstrings.

6.     Sitting for long periods also temporarily deactivates lipoprotein lipase, a special enzyme in the walls of blood capillaries that breaks down fats in the blood.

7.     So when you sit, you are not burning fat as much as you would while moving around.

8.     Sitting for longer periods leads to decrease in concentration levels of brain. Thus slowing down your brain activity.

9.     Researches show that inactivity causes about 9% of premature deaths a year worldwide, that’s over 5 million people.

SOLUTION TO THIS SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE:

1.     Try switching the rounded back position to an erect sitting posture.

2.     Aim to move around much more when you can.

3.     Put an alarm on your smartphone after every hour to get up and move around.

4.     Always remember our bodies are built for moving and not for stillness. Infact since the blog has come to an end, why not stand and move around for sometime?
